Barry Manilow has shared deeply personal health news with fans, telling them that he has been diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer and will take a step away from performing to undergo surgery. The famous singer, 82, best known for timeless hits like Copacabana, Mandy, and I Write the Songs, revealed the diagnosis in a statement posted to social media. According to Manilow, the cancer was found by chance following a serious case of bronchitis that caused his doctor to order additional tests. What was originally meant to be a Safety MRI led to the discovery of a small cancerous spot on his lung.
“It’s pure luck and a great doctor that it was found so early,” Manilow wrote.
Early Detection and Positive Outlook
Doctors have verified that the cancer was spotted at an early stage and is not known to have spread. Manilow is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the affected area and has been told he will not require chemotherapy or radiation. In true Manilow fashion, the singer remained hopeful and light-hearted in his message, telling fans that recovery will require rest, comfort food, and classic television reruns instead of prolonged medical treatment.
Concerts Postponed, Not Canceled
As a result of the upcoming procedure, many of Manilow’s January concert dates have been postponed. The shows are likely to be rescheduled for later in the year, with many now planned for February through April 2026. Manilow expressed regret to fans who were planning to attend the affected performances but promised them that he fully intends to return to the stage as soon as he’s released by doctors. His long running Las Vegas residency at the Westgate is set to resume following his recovery, with hopes of performing around Valentine’s Day.
A Career That Refuses to Slow Down
Despite announcing what he has been referring to as a farewell tour in recent years, Manilow has stayed a constant presence on stage, proving that his connection to live performance runs deeper than his retirement plans. With a career lasting nearly six decades, multiple Grammy wins, chart topping albums, and a loyal fanbase known as “Fanilows,” Manilow’s desire to keep performing has long been part of his personality.
A Message Beyond Music
Manilow’s announcement also acted as a soft reminder of the importance of paying attention to ongoing health symptoms and getting medical advice when something feels off. For now, fans around the world are sending messages of support as the music icon gets ready for surgery hopeful, grateful, and already thinking about his return to the public eye.
